Do you have problems finding a decent web hosting provider?

In choosing a web hosting provider, people are often attracted by marketing gimmicks such as 5 Gb disk space, unlimited monthly data transfer and freebies like web hosting

A website usually do not take up more than 1 MB disk space. Have you ever tried measuring the amount of disk space your website take up? You will be surprised that how little space it usually take up. web hosting provider do provide you with more than enough space than what you need. Even more absurdly, web hosting providers provide up to 500 GB of disk space. How can one ever used up so much disk space!

What are the things to look out for to choose a Singapore web host?

1) Uptime
2) Website loading speed
3) Customer service responsiveness and quality

When a website is accessible we call it “up”, when it is unaccessible we call it “down”. Therefore uptime is the amount of time a website is accessible, usually measured as a percentage of a month. For obvious reason we know that uptime reflected the image of your website. If your website is “down”, it reflect badly on your website and/or company.

Equally important is your website access speed. It is common sense that if your website loads slowly, your visitor will be unhappy. I am sure you have visited websites that take ages to load. Without a good reason, ask yourself will you visit it again? Of course not!

Customer service responsiveness and quality is very important and in my personal opinion more important than uptime. More than often, you tend to put some files in web hosting account. Can you trust a web hosting company which hires part-timers? I have read in web hosting forum about a Singapore web host which hire untrained part-timers simply to handle the company support.

The result? Your so called confidential information is no longer confidential anymore. Can you imagine a company hiring a part-time person with totally no experience to be its security guard? It is just giving itself a false sense of security.

Many web hosting handle support in a way that I do not like personally. I have been a customer of IT Interactive before many years back and had horrible experiences with them. What I needed help with is just a simple mail configuration. They literally replied to me after 2 full days. Can you imagine how frustrated I am to get things done this way? When we are setting up Oryon Networks - our first vision is simply a web hosting provider without any bullshit and just work the way you want it. We just want to keep things simple so that we and our customers are happy.

This is just a pure personal opinion on web hosting

The ultimate in file and media sharing application. MediaCenter Pro was written to act like the larger sites such as putfile, GeoCities and others where users are allowed to create an account and upload and share files. If allowed by the admin user can also create and upload html pages to their accounts and then share the url with others. No FTP access required.

The admin controls every aspect of this site including allowed files extensions, file types, file size, overall size, number of shared folders allowed, etc.

Over 3 months went into coding this and beta testers have installed this on over 1000 different server machines (linux, windows, and even a thumb drive!) Don’t settle for those PHP apps that try to pretend to be like the big boys, this one is it!

MediaCenter Pro is written in PHP and uses 1 mysql database with only 5 settings in one file that need to be set to run out of the box. (your database settings) MediaCenter Pro will run with PHP4 or PHP5 with registered globals on or off and even has a built in smtp function for those that have a hosting account that would require scripts to use smtp authorization in order to send mail.

Want your users to be able to connect to a remote ftp server? MediaCenter Pro has this feature built into it as well.

So, if you would like to run your own file and community sharing website similiar to PutFile, GeoCities or Freewebs here are some of the details of this great PHP website.

As the title of this post says, this tutorial was written with the beginning developer in mind, but yet it is about an advanced topic, so even seasoned developers will enjoy at least skimming through the code.

Of all the tutorials and pages upon pages of code I sifted through when initially working with dynamic graphics in PHP, such as a CAPTCHA script, I found that none of them were truly geared to the beginner, and as far as this topic is concerned, I was one. Sure, I know my way around PHP fairly well, but I was completely new to all of these functions and methods of development. I wanted to find that “perfect” site that spelled each line of code out for me to fully understand, but I found myself still grasping for something more. That said, I will try my best to explain every last bit of this script so that just about anyone with PHP experience can understand what is going on. I figured I can’t be the only person looking for such a thing… So here it is:

What we are going to eventually create is the fully-functional script you can see elsewhere on my web site. To give credit where credit is due, I got most of my inspiration and help from a fellow blogger, Joshua Houle, on his blog; however, I have added a rather large amount of customizability and tweaked his code quite a bit. On to the tutorial (you can download the code at the end)…

ONE NOTE BEFORE BEGINNING: THIS TUTORIAL REQUIRES THE GD LIBRARY TO BE ENABLED IN YOUR INSTALLATION OF PHP. THIS IS FURTHER EXPLAINED LATER IN THE TUTORIAL, BUT IF YOU KNOW FOR SURE WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT, GO AND CHECK RIGHT NOW THAT IT IS ENABLED.
