Many people have been asking me how to do FTP, mainly my hostees. I hope that this little tutorial will help a little.
1.Open up your FTP browser. My favorite is called File Zilla which you can find at my site or on download.com
2. Type in your login details to get onto your FTP where it says address, username and password. These are the only things that you should need.
3. Once your FTP username and other details are accepted, you should be logged into your hosting account.
4. On most FTP browsers, on the right you will see whatever is on your site right now. If it is blank, this means that there is nothing there yet. On the left hand side of your FTP browser are all your files that are currently on your own computer.
5. You are going to want to make a folder dedicated just to your site’s FTP stuff. Once you make a folder, find it in the left-hand area.
6. When you are ready to add things to your site, simple drag whatever you have from the left-side of your window, into the right hand side. Doing this on most FTP browsers will make the very bottom and very top go kinda crazy, meaning that your file is being uploaded to your site. Once your file shows up fully, meaning that there is nothing going on at the very top or bottom of your browser, means that your file has been successfully hosted. If you were to go to yoursite.com/file.extension and fill in the missing pieces, you should see your file.
7. That is basically all that there is to FTP using. You just drag and upload files. If you need to edit something, do it in your computer (left-hand side), and then drag it to your domain (right-hand side). If something comes up asking you if you would like to overwrite the file, click yes if you would like to replace it.
8. Keep in mind that some FTP browsers are different, and I based this off of mine which is File Zilla. If you are still confused on how to do FTP, please just email me at joshjjackson@gmail.com. Thanks!
