Okay, here’s my rant on hosting. I own a few websites, some big, some small. The big sites have their own special hosting needs like a dedicated server and the smaller sites are just fine on a $9/mo shared hosting plan.
Out of the thousands of hosts available, the problem is choosing which one to go with. I have signed up with several of them and most I have canceled within a few days (thankfully most have a 30 day guarantee). I’m usually not satisfied for any one of the following reasons: Either they don’t provide enough ip’s, the cpanel is horrible, no cron, wrong version of php, no ssh, no shell access, on and on.
So my advice is to stop picking a web host by trial and error and to work smarter, not harder. In other words, visit a good hosting review/comparison site and save yourself a ton of headache.
The best review site I’ve found is Top10Hosts.net where they list the top 10 web hosting sites. The reviewer validates his choices with thorough reviews and even covers some of the “not so great” web hosts like Godaddy (duh). You can read all the hundreds of user reviews and can even add your two cents!
